New Nikons… finally

Edvarcl Heng  |  Aug 30, 2007

Right on the back of Casio's camera launch, Nikon bursts out with eight new cameras.

Most of the shooters are updates to existing products, including the wireless-enabled Coolpix S51c (successor to the S50c) which now incorporates a more advanced Internet photo upload service called "my Picturetown". A Nikon representative told CNET Asia that the new service can be configured to sync with a specific Flickr folder as well.

Besides the S51c and its unwired counterpart (the S51), there are also new budget models (L14 and L15) and a new category--the Coolpix S700. Nikon says this is upcoming stylish camera will be targeted at PMEBs (professionals, managers, executives and businessmen) above age 25.

Two new Casio cameras enters the fray

Edvarcl Heng  |  Aug 28, 2007

The early announcement of the EX-S880 and the EX-Z77 in July struck us as a little lacking. Just two? For the rest of the year? That's a little unbelievable.

So it's good to know that the Japanese firm is not satisfied with its meager offering. The appearance of the two new Exilims--the EX-Z1080 and EX-V8--comes near the tail end of the camera launch rush the past two weeks. Perhaps Casio is hoping to create more of an impact at a time when most camera brands are running out of steam?

The EX-Z1080 and the EX-V8 are the successors to the EX-Z1050 and the EX-V7, respectively. However, in terms of new features, the cameras bring precious little to the table. The EX-V8 adds a mere megapixel bump up (7.2 to 8.1 megapixels), while the EX-Z1080 gets an increased light sensitivity of up to ISO 6,400.

Last gasp: New Casio camera?

Edvarcl Heng  |  Aug 28, 2007

Like the unintentional leak of the Sony Cyber-shot H3 just days before its announcement, Casio may be facing the same with possibly a new camera--the Casio Exilim EX-Z1080.

Based on its technical specs, it is clearly the successor to the Casio Exilim EX-Z1050. And like the two cameras announced earlier, the EX-Z1080 will pack the same YouTube video capture mode. Key differences between the two cameras include a marginally larger LCD (2.6-inch vs 2.5-inch) and the inclusion of Face Detection technology.

The Walmart Web site lists three colors for the EX-Z1080: Black, pink and purple.

What lies beneath: Canon's latest dSLRs

Stephen Shankland, CNET.com  |  Aug 23, 2007

Cameras have always been marvels of miniaturization, but with the switch to digital technology, engineers have had to squeeze electronics and computers into camera bodies already filled with mechanical and optical components. Most folks only see the outsides of cameras, but the insides can be works of engineering art, too. Canon's latest SLRs, the EOS-1Ds Mark III and EOS 40D, are a good case in point. Click on the thumbnails to uncover the story within each.

The DX dynamo, the Nikon D300

Phil Ryan, CNET.com  |  Aug 23, 2007

Just in case the announcement of the pro-level D3 isn't enough for you, Nikon has also announced a big brother for its D200 called the D300. The D300 will sport a 12.3-megapixel DX format (24 x 16mm) CMOS sensor, 3-inch 920,000-pixel LCD, and sensitivity of ISO 200 to ISO 3,200 with a Hi-1 mode that extends that to an equivalent to ISO 6,400 and a Lo-1 mode that extends down to ISO 100. Many of the D300's features are the same as the ones found in the D3.

For example the D300 has the same pair of Live View modes for framing with the LCD instead of the optical viewfinder, Nikon's new Expeed image processor, the same 51-point AF system that works with the cameras 1,005-pixel metering system for Scene Recognition and AF tracking, a Virtual Horizon indicator, and selectable 12- or 14-bit output.
