New Olympus dSLRs finally hit the streets in Asia

Edvarcl Heng  |  Apr 27, 2007

Held at DXO at the Esplanade, the launch of the new cameras saw Olympus spokespersons demonstrating the abilities and features of the E-510 and the E-410 to an avid crowd. As probably the only dSLRs that do not require the photographer to keep his eye on the eyepiece for every picture, the ability to frame shots on an LCD screen must be a great boon to the work of photographers when shooting difficult angles. To illustrate this, Olympus invited two Singapore-based photographers, Kim Lau and Kerstin Duell, to share their views on their experience with the new cameras.

The E-410 is now available in Asia and in Singapore, it will be retailing at the price of S$1,299 with a 2GB CF card bundled in. The E-510 will be launched in Asia by end May.

Samsung i70: Perfect for sweet young things

Edvarcl Heng  |  Apr 26, 2007

As with all things Samsung, style takes precedence above all else. This new 7.2-megapixel camera, which is available in silver, black, pink and gold, adorns a woman like a well-made Prada handbag. The sliding case helps to save space on the camera bag and makes way for the 3-inch TFT screen.

Editors' note:
According to Samsung Asia, both the i7 and the i70 will be launched in Southeast Asia in early May.

But the i70 is not all bling. It has a nine-key input pad which can be used to type in alphanumeric characters in a fashion not unlike a mobile phone’s. For those who can’t seem to hold a camera still long enough to snap a decent picture, the i70 has a feature named the Wise shot which takes a shot with both flash and image stabilizer simultaneously and compares the two before displaying the better image. Now isn't that picture perfect?

Samsung i7: Spin it, honey

Edvarcl Heng  |  Apr 26, 2007

The rotating 3-inch touchscreen LCD will probably draw looks, and perhaps some finger smudges. Samsung even paired it with a tagline of “my digital world revolves the way I want”. Turn it on and it’s a camera, spin the LCD 90 degrees and it’s a PVP. Turn it another 90 and it becomes an MP3 player. It’s snazzy fun, a great conversation piece, but it is really more fluff than serious functionality.

Editors' note:
According to Samsung Asia, both the i70 and the i7 will be launched in Southeast Asia in early May.

Cool is the World Tour Guide feature which has travel information for 30 countries such as images and details on famed tourist attractions (or is that traps?) stored in the camera’s 450MB internal memory. And with such a fancy camera, make knowing where the nearest police station is your top priority, since eagle-eyed pickpockets would be eyeballing it, too.

BenQ C1050: A 10-megapixel BenQ camera surfaces

Edvarcl Heng  |  Apr 25, 2007

Here's another camera that BenQ is planning to tote out soon in Asia. It looks like quite a heavy shooter, though we are quite unable to confirm its specifications with a BenQ representative. But according to BenQ Thailand, it may be slated for a Q3 launch in Thailand while it will be retailing in June in Indonesia.

Throw-and-go "invisible" UAV

Mark Rutherford, CNET.com  |  Apr 25, 2007

To see and remain unseen is what military unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) aspire to. In keeping with that goal, Vera Tech Aero has developed the "virtually invisible" Phantom Sentinel.

The aircraft's tripod, boomerang design reportedly relies on the "concept of persistence of vision" for invisibility.

Apparently, the aircraft operates in such a way that it fools the eye/brain motion-detecting apparatus. Because the Phantom's single rotor blade is located outside its fuselage and because it spins in flight it is "virtually undetectable to the human eye", according to Vera Tech.

The UAV can hover and provide a 360-degree picture from a high-speed camera, is GPS compatible and "adverse weather resistant." Best of all, its "throw-and-go" launch option allows you to unass the AO ASAP. It also answers the question of why our boomerang never worked; it was missing a leg and a propeller.
