ConferenceBike

Juniper Foo  |  Oct 22, 2004

Why be satisfied with a bicycle made for two? Designed by American artist and inventor Eric Staller and German built to last, this seven-person ConferenceBike sounds like a hoot. But considering that companies frequently huddle in stuffy rooms for hours in meetings, why not enjoy some fresh air and get a workout at the same time? Never mind that we'll probably be going round in circles, ahem, like most of our meetings.

Segway Centaur

Juniper Foo  |  Oct 14, 2004

Segway, the guys who brought the world the two-wheeled Human Transporter which this little corner of the world, sadly, hasn't had a chance to test drive, has decided that four wheels are better. The scooter pioneer has released a quad plaything called the Centaur which scores alone for its sheer cool factor. Resembling an overgrown toddler's four-wheeler, this offroad bike is anything but kiddy. Geared for any terrain, it can switch between two and four wheels, and works along the same gyroscopic principles as its two-wheeled sibling; i.e. lean forward to go forward, lean back to go back. Plus the Centaur apparently uses regenerative braking, which means the batteries are recharged during deceleration and hill descents. Sweet. Too bad Segway's not ready to go to market with this just yet.

Q-Car

Juniper Foo  |  Oct 01, 2004

Remember Robin William's 1992 movie Toys, where adults got to drive toy cars? The Q-Car is a toy car you can drive. Made by giant toymaker Takara (think Beyblades and Transformers), this is actually modeled after a Japanese children's toy car. However, it's no toy. You'll need a real driver's licence to get behind the wheels of one of these single-seat electric commuters, which has a top speed of 50kmh, max. range of 80km, and an 8-hour charge time. Plastic car horn not included.

Since its 2002 debut, there've been several interesting new models, including one for the Hello Kitty mob.

Price: ¥1.29 million (US$11,591)
Availability: Japan only
Device: Electric car
Basic specs: Weighs 375kg, 8-hour charge time in any electric socket
