The late Michael Jackson was not only the "King of Pop", but also an avid collector of pop culture memorabilia.

In early 2009, Jackson's estate contacted Julien's Auctions with plans for an April 2009 auction of relics Jackson had collected throughout the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s.

Among these treasures, housed at Jackson's Neverland Ranch, were art, furniture, toys, and video games. The items were abruptly pulled from the auction block on March 5, the same day Jackson announced his 50-concert London comeback tour.

News sites prepared for traffic surge during Jackson memorial

Josh Lowensohn  |  Jul 08, 2009
Weeks ago, the news of Michael Jackson's passing brought major news sites to their knees, so Tuesday's memorial service for the singer was expected to bring similar results.

This time it appears sites were better prepared for the traffic onslaught.

Internet Web traffic hit its peak right around the beginning of the service, according to Akamai. (Credit: CNET / Akamai)

According to Gomez Incorporated, a company that monitors Web usage quality, there were both slowdowns and outages, including one that dramatically slowed Twitter's performance. The company analyzed performance on seven news sites from multiple locations during Tuesday's event, with some of the biggest slowdowns coming to streaming video. Asia experienced a 40 percent increase in what the company calls "stalling issues," with the US experiencing an increase of around 5 percent.

40 of the top 100 iTunes chart positions are taken by Michael Jackson

Nate Lanxon  |  Jun 30, 2009

Within the iTunes Store, he accounts for 40 of the current top 100 songs, nine of the top 15 albums, and 25 of the top 30 music video downloads. Michael Jackson's passing has broken millions of hearts, but his posthumous domination of the digital music world is clearly shattering records.

The same is true for Amazon's MP3 store, in which Jacko albums account for 10 of the 25 most downloaded albums, 16 of the top 20 CD albums and five of the top 10 DVDs across all genres at the time of writing--beating new releases such as Gran Torino and Slumdog Millionaire.

Keynote Systems apologizes for inaccurate data after Jackson's death

Greg Sandoval  |  Jun 29, 2009

Keynote Systems, a company that measures Web site performance, created some confusion on Friday by acknowledging that it released inaccurate data on how Web news services fared following the death of Michael Jackson.

Keynote follows a multitude of Web sites and monitors their performance with the help of 3,000 servers in 59 countries. On Thursday, the company said the online units of major news services became nearly inaccessible for long periods of time, as people rushed online to learn about Jackson's condition.

Google thought Michael Jackson traffic was attack

Tom Krazit  |  Jun 29, 2009

Searches for Michael Jackson surged a little before 10 p.m. GMT Thursday.

Google has confirmed that the surge of Michael Jackson-related searches on Google News Thursday was first interpreted as an attack on its service.

Google News was inaccessible for some people Thursday afternoon right as rumors of Jackson's death began to circulate, replaced by an error message reading "We're sorry, but your query looks similar to automated requests from a computer virus or spyware application. To protect our users, we can't process your request right now."
