HP: Yes, we are looking to bring Voodoo to Asia

Damian Koh  |  Jun 12, 2008

BERLIN, GERMANY--The headline says it all.

Although nothing is concrete at the moment, HP representatives have said the company is considering bringing the Voodoo brand to Asia. Voodoo products are sold primarily in the US and via online retailers. The premium computer brand has no distributors or channel partners in Asia.

The company's intention was made known to a group of Asia Pacific and Japan media in a breakout session on the second day of the Connecting Your World event. More details will be made available before the end of the year. Issues such as aftersales service and delivering the customer experience are being discussed internally.

In an aside with CNET Asia, we were told the company has no immediate plans to bring the high-end Voodoo Omen desktop that was announced yesterday to Asia. If anything, the likelihood is higher of the ultraslim Envy 133 (and it's really just a possibility) landing in our region.

For now, it's back to more thumb-twiddling waiting.

Kung Fu Panda in my hands, dissected

Damian Koh  |  Jun 11, 2008

BERLIN, GERMANY--Here at Crave Asia, we've seen numerous flash drives, from palatable sushi to disguised hard drive bricks that grace our gadget blog on a weekly basis. Naturally, we won't pass up on a chance to blog about the Kung Fu Panda thumbdrive that was given to APAC journos who attended HP's Connecting Your World event in Berlin. That said, there's really not much to write about here except that the thumbdrive is in a figurine of Po, the lead character in the animation movie Kung Fu Panda.

Most importantly, this is exclusive to the event here, so you won't be able to get a-hold of one. Hah! More shots of Po dissected and plugged in after the break!

HP shows off concept devices of the future

Damian Koh  |  Jun 11, 2008

BERLIN, GERMANY--HP wants you to believe you never have to sit through another boring meeting, ever. That's only if the Recap Meeting concept takes off. The idea behind it is pretty simple actually. Instead of attending a meeting in person, you assign a virtual avatar that's capable of recording the proceedings, while you're someplace else working on something more important, like burning rubber on Project Racer.

A few other concept devices were showcased to the media attending the Connecting Your World event in Berlin. These included a wearable data manager, which is essentially a ring that contains your personal bio-data profile and reacts to gesture controls; an interactive work surface with two flat surfaces for display and data input; and a volume printer that redefines the shopping experience by "printing" out mockup products before you pay for them.

There's also a tablet-like device which is capable of doing a multitude of tasks, which looks like an uber-cool remote control.

Pictures right after the jump! (And a video of it, too, if I manage to upload the file.)

HP iPaq 912 gets WM6.1 and launch date in Asia

Damian Koh  |  Jun 11, 2008

BERLIN, GERMANY--There's not much news here except now we know the iPaq 912 Series Business Messenger will start shipping in various markets by June 30, and that it will come with the latest Windows Mobile 6.1 operating system.

It is expected to be available in Asia from September at approximately US$549. The rest of the specs remain unchanged, with support for all the wireless options including HSDPA, Wi-Fi and quad-band GSM, built-in GPS and a 3-megapixel camera module.

HP unveils affordable DreamColor display for high-color fidelity

Damian Koh  |  Jun 11, 2008

BERLIN, GERMANY--Born out of a collaboration between HP and DreamWorks Animation, the HP DreamColor LP2480zx display was unveiled for the first time at the company's Connecting Your World event Tuesday. The name is a mouthful, but as it costs less than a quarter the price of an equivalent model on the market, we're more than willing to stomach the awkward model numbering. At US$3,499 a pop (now available worldwide), you are essentially looking at a high color-fidelity, 30bit, 1 billion-color, widescreen display with LED backlighting.

Pictured above is a side-by-side comparison between a standard LCD screen (left) and the DreamColor model (right). The difference may not be that obvious in the image, but since we had the opportunity of eyeballing this upclose, we can attest that the primary colors do indeed carry more punch as claimed by HP. Some other features include 1,920 x 1,200 native resolution, a one-touch access to preset color spaces, night vision interface for darkroom conditions, proprietary software to mange the display and a calibration kit.

Time to retire that junky CRT monitor!
