Acer F1 smartphone gets priced

With the impending Windows Mobile 6.5 (WM6.5) update on October 6, we should be seeing quite a number of new handsets from various manufacturers soon. According to UK-based online retailer Clove Technology, Acer will be releasing the F1 smartphone on that day. Now, we have seen this product previously and even had a hands-on with it during Computex Taipei in June. Till now though, the official name has always been unconfirmed but Clove has simply listed it as the Acer F1--no change from what was supposed to be merely a codename.

What's really interesting is the price, just 295 pounds (about US$480) before subsidies.

IFA Berlin: From OLED TVs to e-lederhosen

BERLIN, GERMANY--The global gadget tour touches down this week here in the German capital, having wound its way through Las Vegas and Taipei, and before it heads off to Tokyo.

IFA, which stands for Internationale Funkausstellung, kicks off Wednesday afternoon. In terms of attendance, IFA Berlin is the largest consumer electronics tradeshow in the world. Like its American counterpart, the Consumer Electronics Show held every January in Las Vegas, it's a place for names large and small in consumer electronics to roll out their latest gizmos so the public, journalists, analysts, and retailers can eye them up close.

For an idea of just how big it is, IFA Berlin in 2008 took up 1.3 million sqft of exhibit space, and brought 215,000 visitors through the doors of the Berlin Messe to see more than 1,200 exhibitors. CES this year had a lower-than-expected attendance of 110,000, 1.7 million sqft of exhibitor space, and 2,700 exhibitors.

Samsung's Ion-based N510 Netbook to arrive next month

Scott Stein  |  Aug 12, 2009

Is Ion finally almost here?

We feel like we've been waiting a long time for this, but Netbooks running Atom processors alongside Nvidia's Ion GPU are finally coming to the America...soon. (Editors' note: Samsung is unable to confirm the availability of upcoming notebooks in Asia currently.)

Reports from Liliputing.com claim that the Samsung N510, an 11.6-inch Netbook, is on its way next month. Included in the N510 will be HDMI out and an "ability to handle Blu-ray", though we're not sure how that will apply in a laptop without an optical drive. We're still waiting for the Lenovo IdeaPad S12 Ion version to arrive--we reviewed the non-Nvidia Atom version of the IdeaPad S12, and found that we really missed the idea of an added graphical boost to what was otherwise a standard Netbook affair.

Acer delays its Android Netbook

Erica Ogg  |  Jul 29, 2009

Is Acer backing off the idea of an Android-based Netbook?

A new report out of Taiwan, where the PC maker is based, says the production of the previously announced dual-boot Netbook with Windows XP and Android is being delayed.

The report in Digitimes, says that while Acer had previously planned an earlier launch, "further evaluation has found demand for an Android Netbook is not strong enough, and it has therefore decided to postpone the launch of the model."

Digitimes says it was previously announced for an August release, but that it is being pushed back to November. When asked for confirmation, an Acer spokesperson said only that "Acer has not yet announced timing of a dual-boot Netbook."

For tech journalists, CommunicAsia in Singapore is one of the biggest events in June (next to the Computex Taipei). For such events, we are always on the go, whether to scout the halls for the latest and weirdest tech gadgets, or attending announcements where big-name vendors announce their services and products. Some companies even hold their separate events at various locations in the country. Getting news out with such a hectic schedule can be impossible if we depend on wireless hotspots at CommunicAsia, so we gave StarHub's new prepaid mobile broadband and HSPA+ a go to see if it helps in our work.
