Android-based HTC Passion rumors

We've seen the Motorola Droid and the HTC Droid Eris from Verizon Wireless so far, but apparently there is a third Verizon Android handset waiting in the wings, if rumors are to be believed.

Rumors are that it will be the HTC Passion, which is supposedly powered by a 1GHz Snapdragon chipset (the Passion might also be called the Dragon). The rumor mill (from Boy Genius, Phone Arena, and elsewhere) claims that the HTC Passion will feature a 5-megapixel camera, a large WVGA-resolution screen with multitouch, a 3.5mm headset jack, 256MB RAM, and it's said to run Android 2.0 with the HTC Sense overlay.

We have heard nothing about this through official channels, so this is strictly rumor territory here, but we can't help but be intrigued by this mythical phone. The Android 2.0 with multitouch and the Snapdragon processor certainly puts it just a notch above the Droid. Perhaps that's why Verizon is keeping mum about the device for now. Still, the rumor mill claims we'll see an announcement about the Passion/Dragon in mid-December, so we'll definitely keep an eye for that.

Ask the Editors: Touchscreen durability

Nicole Lee  |  Oct 14, 2009

Hi Nicole, I'm thinking of upgrading my mobile phone in the near future. I've been a BlackBerry user for the past couple of years, and I've really given this thing a beating. I have dropped it more times than I can count, sometimes at a great enough velocity to send the battery cover flying well past the rest of the phone. What I am wondering is, how durable are today's touchscreen phones? I've heard that the Pre is particularly fragile. Are the OLED devices any better or worse? Would you recommend someone like me sticking with a non-touch device, since once you crack a touch screen, you are left with an expensive paperweight? -- Jay, via email.

LG debuts official Chocolate BL20 video

Nicole Lee  |  Sep 22, 2009

Much has been made about the elongated touchscreen beauty that is the LG BL40 Chocolate phone. It has a really nice 4-inch display with the 21:9 wide-screen ratio, a 5-megapixel camera, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and lots more--you can read CNET UK's early hands-on with the BL40 to get more details.

But we haven't talked much about the BL40's lesser sibling, the LG BL20. The LG BL20 looks a little like a stretched LG KG800. It appears to have a very impressive display, as well as a sliding keypad and tons of cool features like a 5-megapixel camera, TextScan--which lets you capture images of notes--and a "widget hot key" that lets you view widgets, like news and the weather.

NTT DoCoMo eyes US market

Nicole Lee  |  Sep 09, 2009

Considering many MVNOs have failed or been acquired in recent years (Helio, Disney Mobile, Virgin Mobile, just to name a few), we can't help but think they're a bad idea. (MVNOs are Mobile Virtual Network Operators that sell their own service plans and handsets, but piggyback on another carrier's network). Still, that apparently hasn't stopped Japan's NTT DoCoMo from thinking about starting one up in the US.

Indeed, it seems that the Japanese company is contemplating leasing capacity from either T-Mobile USA or AT&T. While we can't imagine it'll make too much money in the beginning, we're kind of excited about the idea, especially if it means we finally get to play with the high-end handsets with the i-mode mobile Internet service that heretofore have only been available in Japan.

Plantronics Discovery 975's luxury Bluetooth headset

Plantronics on Thursday announced the Plantronics Discovery 975, which it touts as a luxury fashion-forward Bluetooth headset built with premium performance. It's the successor to the Plantronics Discovery 925, and it shows--the Discovery 975 inherited that skinny hairpin-like design, right down to the square diamond base.

However, the Discovery 975 carries the brains of the Plantronics Voyager Pro, with its AudioIQ2 noise canceling and WindSmart wind-noise reduction technologies.
