Lowepro has recently added to its lineup of all-weather camera bags. The new bags all share Lowepro's All-Weather construction, with built-in rain covers for when conditions change. Some bags have removable laptop sleeves; one even has a flip-up sunshade. From smaller, stealthier bags, to holster-style cases and full-size backpacks, there is something to meet the wide array of needs of professionals and photo enthusiasts.

The Pro Trekker 300 AW, 400 AW, and 650 AW are professional-grade backpacks designed to carry large amounts of gear. The model number refers to the largest focal-length lens that can be on the camera when it is inserted in the bag. The bags have removable waist belts that can be used as work belts, and they have hydration-ready side pockets with seam-sealed pouches.

The new AF-S DX 85mm Micro lens focuses as close as 10.8 inches, with reproduction ratios up to 1:1. with its 127.5mm (35mm-equivalent) focal length, it allows for a good lens-to-subject working distance while doing close-up work, as well as being suitable for portrait and nature work.

M.I.T. undergrads shoot a US$150 camera into space

You don't always need an expensive professional dSLR to capture awe-inspiring images. Sometimes, a basic Canon A470 point-and-shoot, a little ingenuity, and a beer cooler are all you need. That is what two M.I.T. students used to capture images of the Earth from space, well, actually the upper atmosphere; technically, it wasn't high enough to be space.

Justin Lee and Oliver Yeh, M.I.T. students, had a goal of flying a camera high enough to photograph the curvature of the earth, they named it Project Icarus. Without having a NASA-size budget for a rocket, they opted for the more cost-effective method of filling a weather balloon with helium and suspending a Styrofoam cooler underneath that held the camera. They also placed some instant hand warmers inside the cooler to try to keep the camera and its battery from freezing.

Olympus released firmware updates on Tuesday, September 15, 2009, for the Olympus E-P1 camera and two lenses, the Zuiko ED 14-42mm F3.5-5.6 as well as the Zuiko 17mm F2.8 lens. The firmware update, version 1.1 for both the camera and lenses, improves the camera's continuous auto-focus (C-AF) operation. The lenses will benefit from the v1.1 firmware with enhanced auto-focus performance. The Olympus Master software updates each lens' firmware individually and will update the camera firmware.

We generally recommend installing the latest firmware updates for your camera, so you can get the most out of your gear. For more information on firmware updates for a specific camera, visit the manufacturer's Web site. Before installing any firmware upgrade, always take the time to read through all of the documentation and follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully.
