Complaints of Internet-related crimes soared 33 percent last year, countering two years of consecutive declines, according to a report released Monday by the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3).

The IC3 Web site received 275,284 complaints last year, up from 206,884 the previous year. The organization referred 72,940 of those 2008 complaints to federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies. The IC3 is a partnership among the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the National White Collar Crime Center, and the Bureau of Justice Assistance.

Apple is expected to begin production on a high-end iPhone with 32GB of flash memory and a low-end 3G version this spring, according to a research report released Tuesday by Lazard Capital Markets analyst.

Production is anticipated to begin in April and ramp up in May, and the new phones could be announced in June, Daniel Amir, a Lazard Capital Markets analyst, said in his report.

He noted, however, that the low-end version may only be available in the fast-growing, emerging markets of Brazil, Russia, India, and China, while the high-end version is expected to make its way to North America and Europe.

Global wireless subscriptions for 3G and 4G networks are expected to account for 30 percent of the market within the next five years, according to a report released Wednesday by In-Stat.

That's a substantial increase from the 11 percent slice of the global market that 3G held at the end of last year, the report noted.

The increase is expected to come by 2013, as wireless carriers upgrade their cellular networks to 4G from 3G, and network equipment makers roll out their commercial 4G products toward the end of the year.

4G technology Long Term Evolution (LTE) is expected to give WiMax stiff competition in the 4G market, but, for now, In-Stat notes WiMax has a head start and may hold its own.

Palm seeks to raise money for Pre launch

Dawn Kawamoto  |  Mar 10, 2009

Palm announced Monday plans to offer up a bundle of stock, as it seeks to raise capital for the launch of its highly anticipated Pre smartphone.

The handheld device maker, depending on market conditions, plans to offer 18.5 million shares in a secondary offering between now and March 31, a Palm spokeswoman said.

Proceeds from the sale will be used to repay US$49 million to its investor Elevation Partners, with the remainder going toward working capital for the launch of the Pre and future product development.

With Palm currently trading at US$6.38 a share, the offering would be valued at $118 million if it were to go out today with Palm collecting more than half for its Pre efforts.

The plans for the follow-on offering stem from an agreement Palm and Elevation struck late last year.

Under the arrangement, Elevation Partners invested US$100 million in Palm and allowed the handset maker to have the freedom to force it to re-market 49 percent of its Palm shares that were tied to its series C preferred stock and warrants. But Palm has to exercise its rights to do so by March 31.

Prior to Elevation's announcement, Palm's stock had been trading in the US$1.50 to US$2 a share range for much of December.

S&P adds green index

Dawn Kawamoto  |  Mar 10, 2009

Investors received another tool Monday designed to track green themes and greenbacks.

Standard & Poor's launched on Monday its S&P US Carbon Efficient Index, designed to measure the performance of large-cap US companies operating with a low carbon emissions footprint.

The index, which currently has 362 companies gleaned from the S&P 500, are selected using calculations from Trucost, an environmental data gathering organization.

David Blitzer, chairman of Standard & Poor's Index Services index committee, said in a statement: "Organizations around the world are paying greater attention to the impact of greenhouse gases on our climate, as increasingly more investors consider carbon efficiency as an important investment theme."
