Sony's backlit sensor technology current stands at 10 megapixels, and is used in point-and-shoots such as the
Cyber-shot DSC-TX1 and
WX1. Come next year, the resolution of such sensors may be pushed to 14.6 megapixels when Toshiba starts production on its new imaging chip.
The new sensor will also support 1080p video recording at 60 frames per second, so shutterbugs can expect such movie-recording specifications in point-and-shoots and even camera-phones next year.
However, we have concerns about increasing the megapixel count on such a small sensor, as it means each pixel is smaller and less sensitive to light. However, it is mentioned on
Image Sensors World that the light sensitivity on the new sensor is increased by 40 percent due to the use of backlit technology. I guess we'll know only when cameras using such sensors are made available next year.
