For a long while, BlackBerry users in Asia Pacific didn't have access to
App World. Beginning today, those in Indonesia and Singapore can download applications from the BlackBerry online application store. Previously, when they tried to access the App World function on their BlackBerrys, they got the message that says the service wasn't available in their country.
According to RIM, BlackBerry OS version 4.2 version or higher is required. The App World will run on BlackBerry smartphones that have either a trackball, touch-sensitive trackpad or touchscreen and support for the GSM/GPRS/EDGE/UMTS/HSDPA/HSPA networks. Some of the featured apps include iCabSG Dialer Singapore Cabs, Pintas (Internet search), Spionard (a surveillance system) and Foyage (LBS travel companion).
We also learned that Hong Kong had a soft launch of App World today, although RIM didn't provide any more details. No word either on when paid apps would be available in Indonesia and Singapore.
Aside from downloading apps directly onto their handsets, BlackBerry users can browse the store on their desktop via the Web browser. A link to the selected app will then be sent to the device, after which the user can download the app from the client on the handset.
