Motorola unveiled its first Android smartphone, the Dext, not too long ago. But that's not all the company has lined up for the year. A certain Motorola Droid has been exhaustively leaked by Boy Genius Report (BGR), and up to this point, it looks pretty impressive.
BGR's extensive gallery of photos shows that it's a slideout model with a landscape-oriented keyboard. On the back, there's a slider mechanism which hides a 5-megapixel camera and a pair of photo lights.
What's most interesting is the software. The Droid will come with Android 2.0, Google's latest version of its mobile operating system. From what we can see so far, this handset is a "with Google" phone, which probably means it has the default Android interface and not Motorola's custom Motoblur UI. If true, it will be similar to what HTC did with the T-Mobile G1, the first Android phone to hit the market over a year ago. When launched outside of the US as the HTC Dream, it took on a different form with additional customizations because the company did not use the "with Google" branding.
We probably won't see this phone in Asia, at least not for a while. Operator Verizon Wireless will be selling it in the US, which means the Droid works in a CDMA environment, which is not compatible with most of the cellular networks used in Europe and Asia. But it will be one to watch as the capabilities of Android's next major revision will be demonstrated in this phone. Verizon has already started a teaser campaign titled "Droid Does", which takes potshots at the Apple iPhone for its lack of features such as multitasking and a relatively low-resolution screen.

This seems like a cool device. I am waiting for a good new Android device with a slider QWERTY as a next upgrade to my current HTC TP2. Would like to go from WinMo to Android.
Other than the old HTC Dream, I'm still waiting...
