SAN FRANCISCO--In what was a cool demonstration during Intel CEO Paul Otellini's keynote today at the Intel Developer Forum (IDF), a prototype MID (mobile Internet device) was shown that could also work as a phone. Though slightly bulkier than the Nokia Internet Tablet, this MID phone is still relatively smaller than the current beefier MIDs. One has to presume that this runs on Moorestown since the 32nm system-on-chip Atom for smartphones is a topic of interest at the three-day forum.

Demonstrated on the MID handset was Moblin 2.1, Intel's latest version of its open-source operating system built to run on phones, PDAs right down to notebooks.

Moblin 2.1 will offer a software development kit for developers that will let them design applications that can work on devices with screens ranging from small to sizable like those on a laptop. Otellini also revealed that there will be support for Flash and Silverlight, which means interactive Web apps can run on the device's browser, as opposed to just vanilla Web pages. Take a look at the inbuilt apps and other features of the Moblin 2.1 in the video below.
