Mobile phone manufacturers typically work on upcoming phones up to a few years ahead. So when a product gets released in the market, it would have already been in production for the past couple of years. Likewise, engineers could already be working on products that may see light of day only three or four years down the road. So when rumors start to hit the Web of an impending Xperia X3, it doesn't come as a surprise even though the
X2 isn't even in the market yet. There's a huge possibility that the two handsets were developed side-by-side.
Sony Ericsson also told us before that the Xperia range encompasses new product concepts (a good example is the
Xperia Pureness) and is "not tied to a particular operating system, form factor or target audience". So it's entirely plausible for the X3 to run on Android. Word is the X3 has a pending launch in January 2010 and will pack a
4-inch 800 x 400 touchscreen, 8.1-megapixel camera, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, HSPA, A-GPS, 3.5mm audio jack and VGA video capture. Right now, the
Xperia X2 is expected to be available in Q4, so if all these turn out to be true, we could see the X2 and X3 hit the market in quick succession. Fingers crossed, yeah?
