Update: The GW620 will be available in Asia later this year. LG could not be more specific for the entire region but told us it is scheduled for a November launch in Singapore.
LG today officially announced the GW620, its first smartphone based on the Google Android operating system. In its press release, the Korean company did not reveal many technical details of this new handset. What we do know is that it has a landscape-oriented slide-out QWERTY keypad and comes with a 3-inch touchscreen display. It will be available in Europe in Q4. We have contacted LG and are awaiting information regarding its availability in Asia.
Last week, Motorola announced the Dext, an Android-based smartphone with a slide-out keyboard. That model has not been confirmed for Asia. Currently, the only Android handset with a physical keyboard available on the market is the HTC Dream. In the same press release, LG also reiterated its commitment to the Windows Mobile (WM) platform, stating it will be releasing 13 new WM smartphones in the next 16 months.
