There's the
Wii MotionPlus just launched and Microsoft's
Project Natal in the pipeline. Now, Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Kaz Hirai has confirmed that the company's own enhanced motion-sensing controller will be hitting stores come March to June 2010. This is to ensure that there is compatible software (read: Games) to support the new technology according to an interview with
The Times of London. A prototype system, based on the PlayStation Eye camera, was first showcased at E3 2009 using demos such as a first-person fighting game pictured above. Based on a
separate report, the device's development kit was already in the hands of various game developers and studios.
With this latest news, the three major game platforms from Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo will each be pitching its own flavor of the next-generation gesture and motion-sensing controllers. The Wii MotionPlus may have an early headstart in this case, but it will have to compete against the two more advanced implementations that will employ object recognition and movement detection. However, ask any avid first-person shooting gamer like yours truly and we'll happily trade these motion controllers for an old-fashioned keyboard and mouse or light gun anytime. Anyone from the console industry reading me? Hello?
