Out goes the "fat" PlayStation 3 and in comes its sexy new sibling. The rumored PS3 Slim has finally been unveiled in Cologne, Germany, for Gamescom Expo. It features all the functions of its predecessor, less the Linux operating system compatibility, and comes with an overhauled 45nm Cell processor. The new chip is said to consume just two-thirds the power of the original 60nm chip, and hence, operates cooler and quieter.

We've already received news that the PS3 Slim will be arriving in Asia come September/ October. What remains is the streamlined model's pricing for our region, though it should not deviate much from the stateside US$299 tab. With the latest development, it seems the PS3 Slim has regained the "affordable" Blu-ray player crown, while addressing the noise issue which plagued the original kit.
