Sometimes, even premium laptops can fail. A year after Dell and HP owned up on faulty Nvidia video cards in their notebooks, Sony has only recently admitted to the same issue in a small number of its Vaio machines.
But to the Japanese company's credit, it is not only going to repair and replace faulty units even if these are out of warranty, but also offering an additional three-year coverage for the Nvidia graphics processor. Affected models include:
VGN-AR1xx, VGN-AR2xx, VGN-AR3xx
VGN-FZ1xx, VGN-FZ2xx, VGN-FZ3xx, VGN-FZ4xx
VGC-LT1xx, VGC-LT2xx
For now it seems that only GeForce 8000 series chips are the weak link. If you have any of the above models, you can contact your local Sony support for more information on repairs and replacement. Alternatively, you can check out the
Sony US announcement as it applies to Asia markets as well. For Singapore-specific information, click
