To push for greater mobile broadband penetration among youths, StarHub is offering free access to Windows Live Messenger for selected Windows Mobile and Nokia Symbian handsets from August 8. This allows you to log into these programs without incurring any data charges. The LG GM730, which will be launching tomorrow, has the added bonus of complimentary surfing for its embedded Facebook program.
There are some limitations to the scheme. Though basic Live Messenger features like chatting and voice clips are free, actions such as launching the Internet browser, checking Hotmail, search, Link to Space and creating New Live ID are chargeable. The other is that only mobiles preinstalled with the Live Messenger and Facebook applications are eligible for this plan. These handsets currently include
Nokia E71,
Nokia E63,
Nokia E52,
HTC Diamond,
HTC Touch HD,
HTC Diamond2,
HTC Touch Pro 2,
Samsung Omnia,
Samsung Omnia II and
LG GM730.
StarHub is currently working toward making more Windows Mobile and Symbian phones compatible, though no plans has been made for the Android interface at this time. For a list of currently supported phones, click
