iiView A2: MacBook Air wannabe Netbook

Darius Chang  |  Jul 31, 2009

At the Windows 7 press event recently, we got a little surprise. iiView, a Singapore-based vendor, showcased a sexy Netbook with a generous 12.1-inch display.

Cyril Alonzo, chief executive officer of iiView, said that instead of making just another Netbook to feed into the already saturated market, he aimed to create a desirable product. Taking a page from the Apple MacBook Air, the iiView A2 is a sleek Atom-based minilaptop, but at an affordable price of around S$699 (US$493.47). In fact, the design is so similar that even the monitor-out and USB port are hidden within a flip on the side. Specifications include:

  • Atom 1.6GHz processor
  • 2GB RAM
  • Intel 945 chipset
  • 12.1-inch 1,280 x 800-pixel resolution
  • 320GB HDD
  • Two USB ports, mini-HDMI port, 2-in-1 headphone/mic jack
  • 802.11b/g, 10/100 Ethernet
  • Six-cell battery
  • Windows 7 RC1 with Vista Home Premium license

  • Interestingly enough, this Netbook comes preinstalled with Windows 7 RC1. Cyril said the reason is because Vista does not provide an adequate experience on a Netbook. Fortunately, since the machine comes with a Vista Home Premium license it is eligible for the free upgrade to Windows 7 Home Premium when the latter launches on October 22. The iiView A2 will be available in Singapore by next week for an estimated retail of S$699 (US$493.47), which is cheaper than the Dell Mini 12, another 12.1-inch Netbook. We have a review unit on hand, so watch out for a full rundown of this sexy machine soon.
