Sony E440 series announced

Update: We just got word from Sony that the E440 series will arrive in Asia in October.

Sony has announced a refresh of its entry-level video Walkman players with the new E440 series. Like the previous E340 series, the E440 has a circular D-pad and matching menu buttons. The overall effect suspiciously resembles a certain iconic Disney mouse's head at first glance. The new Walkman is 9.3mm thin (to the E340's 8.5mm), and comes in two colors--black and a rather outstanding two-tone red and black . Besides the improved looks, the specifications remain mostly unchanged from the E430.

Some main features that we spotted in the press release are: A 2-inch QVGA screen, support for MP3, WMA, AAC, MPEG-4, WMV and H.264 files, an FM tuner, and a battery life of 30 hours for music playback and 6 hours for video. The new E440 series consists of the NWZ-E443, NWZ-E444 and NWZ-E445. These come in 4GB, 8GB and 16GB capacities, respectively.

The E440 range has been announced for the European market. We are awaiting word from Sony Asia on the players' availability for Asia, but are pretty confident these will reach our shores eventually. Stay tuned for updates.
