Panasonic has released new firmwares for several of its Lumix cameras. The updates have one specific task--to prevent consumers from using third-party batteries on the camera. According to the Japanese firm, this is because some of these juice packs were not manufactured according to Panasonic's safety standards and may overcharge, heat up easily or short-circuit and damage the battery.
To protect its users, the company has released firmware updates on its
Web site to allow Lumix owners to download and perform the update themselves. But before you commence to upgrade the firmware, remember to read and follow the instructions carefully.
For shutterbugs who are using third-party batteries, do note that Panasonic will not honor the warranty if your camera is damaged due to use of unauthorized accessories.
