Tracking the iPhone 3GS in Asia

Damian Koh  |  Jul 09, 2009

The iPhone 3GS became available in the US, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Switzerland and the UK on June 19. That's two days after the official release of the 3.0 software update (free for current iPhone users). iPod touch owners will have to fork out US$9.95 for the upgrade. The iPhone 3GS has a suggested retail price of US$199 and US$299 for the 16GB and 32GB models, respectively, with a two-year AT&T contract.

In Asia, these are the launch dates.

Country Telco Date Remarks
Australia Optus June 26 MMS and tethering enabled

Japan SoftBank June 26 SIM-locked; MMS enabled

Other tidbits:
  • 29 carriers, including SoftBank, Bharti, Vodafone, Hutchison Telecom, Optus, Telstra and SingTel, will support the MMS feature with the OS 3.0.
  • The iPhone 3GS is expected to retail in 80 countries by August.
  • The 8GB iPhone 3G will be getting a price cut to US$99. Check with your local telco operator by clicking on the above links for more details.
  • Tethering works with Macs and PCs, via USB or Bluetooth. There's no need for additional software but it requires carrier support.

Hi... are there any indications that Starhub will bring either Iphone 3G or Iphone 3GS this year? And I thought Starhub should bring Iphone last year. Why the sudden change =( I was so disappointed after reading the news last year.... :(

    sonisoe says...
what do you mean by "retail in 80 countries by august".... currently in Indonesia you can get an iphone without contract for a full price but can only be used on one provider (telkomsel)... will it be open to any operator in august ?

    jemgx says...
eventually CNET Asia change it after i left the comment. those who read it first hand will know. those like mook73 will ask where as if he would like to pay USD99. good for you

    jemgx says...
Other operator changes their mind into selling iPhone, maybe because they think is not making a good progress, who would ever want to inveset on something that don't make money. Maybe.......
