Crave Asia

A drool-worthy home theater for hardcore A/V buffs

This may not be the most glamorous-looking home theater room in Singapore, but I'm pretty sure it's one of the best-sounding and more visually stunning around. An elaborate creation by a fellow enthusiast in Xtremeplace forum, this setup not only comprises top-notch A/V components, but features various special touches. These range from seven electronically calibrated (read: Equalized) subwoofers to a full room acoustic treatment up to 8 inches deep to absorb the faintest room reverberation. All these are packed into a confined 3.3 x 4.5m space with complete light control.

The result is pin-point precision of the surround sound effects, while the total impact of seven subwoofers deliver deep subsonic bass for a pure adrenaline rush. Rounding up all this are pristine full-HD visuals projected onto a theatrical-sized 92-inch screen. Next week, I'm going to feature another high-power setup from Hong Kong. But for now, here's a quick rundown on the key ingredients of this no-holds-barred "home-cinema-in-a-bed-room".

Great having all these superb equipments. Good for your great enjoyment.
But the one thing i fail to understand is.... Do those 7 subwoofers get enough room space to be able to display their full potential?

I just wonder whether there is a need to have a preamplifier and 2 power amplifiers. Will just a high power amplifier be sufficient?

As for my set, I have a pair of surround back speakers and another cone type with higher pitch mounted on the ceiling and pointing down at a certain angle above the surround speakers. This is becos' the sound that delivers from the surround speakers is rather blunt.

As for the 7 subwoofers being used, does one really needs so many unless one wants to blast the entire room? But again, the sound from the subs will overshadow the other speakers and can't achieve the clarity. Probably having 2 active high power with crossovers should be sufficient.

Reason being that the volume of the 7 subs cannot be turned on loud under normal usage unless the user wants to blast the entire room. Turning them too soft also has a disadvantage in that the low base cannot be achieved.

End of the day, it all voices down to whether so many speakers and amps are necessary. I am of he opinion that what is more essential are to have the floor, walls and ceilings laid with appropriate sound acoustic materials including the curtains used.

The above is my personal view.
