HP launches calculator app for iPhone and Windows

It looks like a fourth generation of my family is going to be introduced to the ways of reverse Polish notation calculators.

That's because my three-year-old son, an iPhone fan in his own preschool way, is about to be exposed to Hewlett-Packard's new iPhone application that fully emulates the company's 12c financial calculator. The US$14.99 application is accompanied by a US$29.99 emulator of the 15c scientific calculator, which is better at handling trigonometry and integration than mortgage payments and net present value.

All that's missing is the pocket protector-like iPhone case, my colleague Ina Fried cracked as she mocked my nerdish tendencies.

Keynote Systems apologizes for inaccurate data after Jackson's death

Greg Sandoval  |  Jun 29, 2009

Keynote Systems, a company that measures Web site performance, created some confusion on Friday by acknowledging that it released inaccurate data on how Web news services fared following the death of Michael Jackson.

Keynote follows a multitude of Web sites and monitors their performance with the help of 3,000 servers in 59 countries. On Thursday, the company said the online units of major news services became nearly inaccessible for long periods of time, as people rushed online to learn about Jackson's condition.

HTC TouchFlo 3D tweaked to hide even more

John Chan  |  Jun 29, 2009

New shortcuts below the clock.

We've seen the latest iteration of HTC's TouchFlo 3D on the Touch Diamond2 and Pro2 smartphones. This comes with quite a number of improvements over the last version of HTC's custom interface. Some of them include large menus throughout the Windows Mobile (WM) OS and an enhanced contacts page which integrates your text messages, emails and even Facebook updates for each address book entry. It seems like HTC is not quite done with the tweaks, and a future update to TouchFlo 3D has emerged showing further efforts to hide the default WM interface.

According to the screenshots, most of the settings pages have been skinned so you don't need to access the default Settings menu to get things changed. Shortcut icons have also been added to the Home screen below the clock so you can get to favorite applications or contacts quickly. Pocketnow speculates that the new version will make its way into the WM6.1-equipped Pro2 and Diamond2 when those devices get upgraded to WM6.5 later in the year. It's a likely proposition, but one we'll have to wait to see if it really happens. At the earliest, this will likely be in August or September.

LG bucks the trend in the LED TV competition

While most HDTV manufacturers are racing to show off newer, wafer-thin edge LED panels, LG is bucking the trend by launching two traditional backlit models. Instead of emphasizing sleek designs and eco-friendliness, the Korean chaebol is pushing the performance envelope by outfitting its latest 55LH95 and 55LH93 models with seven times more LEDs than their edgelit siblings. This enables more precise backlighting control via a local dimming function that helps boost dynamic contrast to a high 5,000,000:1 rating. Both entries also feature a fast 240Hz refresh rate for smoother moving images and integrated wireless connectivity with an external media box sans any image degradation.

The 24.8mm-thin 55LH95 and 55LH93 will be rolled out in Korea from July at US$5,500 and US$5,900, respectively. The rest of Asia will have to wait and see if it gets these eventually.

Android developers get native-code kit

David Meyer  |  Jun 29, 2009

A native application development kit has been released for Android developers, offering a way to create certain kinds of high-performing applications for handsets running the Google platform.

Android applications run through the Dalvik virtual machine, which emulates a Java virtual machine. On Thursday, the Android Native Development Kit (NDK) was released, allowing coders to create parts of their Android 1.5 applications outside Dalvik, using native-code languages such as C and C++.

This approach would not ordinarily produce a massive performance boost, but it does allow developers to reuse existing C and C++ code for Android applications.
