This puppy is known as the Bravia ZX1-series and features a mere 9.9mm-thin bezel. Slated for launch in Singapore come June, the superslim KLV-40ZX1 is Sony's answer to the latest edgelit LED TVs from Samsung. But unlike the Korean's 29.9mm-thin offerings, this Japanese concoction uses an A/V media box that communicates wirelessly with its full-HD LCD panel. In addition, the screen has a 10-bit color reproduction to render a billion discreet hues, plus Motionflow 100Hz and image blur reduction technology for smoother and sharper motion.
For the record, LG earlier announced an even slimmer 5.9mm-thin edgelit LED TV. However, it looks more like a prototype with scant details revealed and we seriously doubt it will be launched in Asia anytime soon.
However, as the KLV-40ZX1, launched late last year, is only now being brought in to Singapore, the TV comes outfitted with the older Bravia Engine 2 processor and 1080i-only wireless transmission capability. The latter's bottleneck may have a detrimental impact on playing back bandwidth-heavy 1080p Blu-ray movies. What's more, this model lacks IDTV for receiving digital HD broadcasts and DLNA-compatibility for network multimedia streaming.
As a tradeoff, this panel is bundled with two sets of speakers for various mounting options. These include a nifty pedestal stand that doubles as a boombox, as well as a slim sound bar which sits below the bezel to cater for wall-mounted units. You'll also get a radio frequency (RF) remote control that will work through walls and obstacles.
