Forget incremental processor updates. The next-generation Intel Netbook platform, codenamed Pine Trail, will take an evolutionary leap and combine the processor with a memory controller and graphics engine on a single chip.
Currently, the processor sits separately from the memory controller and graphics chipset. As such, data has to be transferred between the individual parts for computing. This not only limits the actual computing speed, but also results in more energy wastage as heat. The next-generation "Pineview" Atom processor will not only provide a faster computing experience, but generate less heat and enable Netbooks to run without a cooling fan.
Word is we will see models based on the new Intel Netbook chipset during the Taipei Computex tradeshow in June, so keep a lookout for our show coverage next month.
