LG sets a new yardstick with 5.9mm-thin LED TVs

Imagine an HDTV that is half the thickness of your finger. Hailed as the world's thinnest 42- and 47-inch LCD panels, the upcoming LG LED TVs set a new benchmark with a 5.9mm-thin bezel. The Korean company has achieved this feat by employing edgelit LED backlight and a newly developed light guide sheet. The latter more than halved the depth of a conventional light guide plate, allowing these new displays to sport sleek side profiles. Furthermore, these LG edgelit LED TVs are also a lot lighter at 6.1kg and 7.3kg for the 42- and 47-incher, respectively. Having said that, it's unclear whether they will utilize an external A/V media box to help shed the extra kilos.

In comparison, the recently launched Samsung B6000-, B7000- and B8000-series edgelit LED TVs measure just 29.9mm-thin. The models pack fully integrated electronics ranging from digital TV tuners to all the key input sockets and networking capability.

On the picture quality front, both models feature native full-HD resolution, improved color gamut to 80 percent NTSC standard and a 120Hz refresh rate matched by a humble 8ms response time.
