AMD's upcoming laptop platform, Tigris, is expected to appear at Taiwan Computex this June. Tigris machines will sport the new 45nm dual-core Caspian processor on SB710 or RS880M series chipsets with ATI Mobility Radeon M90 graphics cards.
While Intel has already migrated to 45nm-based platforms for over a year, AMD
downplayed the significance of the manufacturing technology and instead went on to focus on the user experience. Though
AMD's Puma and
Intel's Centrino 2 can be equipped with both integrated and discrete graphics chipsets, the actual execution is quite different. While the Santa Clara company made its machines switch between video processors depending on whether battery life or performance is required, Puma allows both graphics chips to be used simultaneously. Tigris will continue to offer this feature as well and is expected to provide a stronger graphics performance.
Tigris will appear in midsized machines with screen sizes above 14 inches, while the single-core Yukon platform, first seen in the
HP Pavilion dv2, handles thinner and lighter machines.
