Bluetooth 3.0 devices expected in the next nine to 12 months

Damian Koh  |  Apr 22, 2009

The Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) has given its nod to the Bluetooth 3.0 specification, a short-range wireless technology based on the current 2.1 EDR version with faster transfer speeds.

Here's how it works. Devices equipped with both Bluetooth 3.0 and Wi-Fi will be paired via the former, while data transfer is actually carried out via an ad-hoc Wi-Fi connection. Benefits of this include throughput transfers of up to 24Mbps as well as better energy efficiency with a built-in power control mechanism.

The new standard will also be backward compatible and the Bluetooth SIG expects devices with the specification to be out in the next nine to 12 months.
