Remember the Probabilistic CMOS chip? You know, the one which promises faster performance while consuming 30 times less power? If not, click here to refresh your memory.

Seems like the first machines based on the new technology may start popping up earlier than expected. Unveiled on IEEE's 25th anniversary event on March 10, the I-Slate is a solar-powered slate tablet PC which seeks to bring education to children in developing nations. Though hardly a performance monster, the creators, Dr Krishna Palem and his team from Rice University, say the I-Slate will be inexpensive and capable of downloading educational materials via Wi-Fi. Unfortunately, details of the specifications and price are not available at this time.

The prototypes will be ready for testing in the spring of 2009, and the first country to try them out will be India.
