Canon EOS dSLR thumbdrive won't take pictures

Leonard Goh  |  Mar 30, 2009

Over here at CNET Asia, we've seen some quirky thumbdrives, but this ought to hit the sweet spot for photographers. The acclaimed Canon EOS 5D Mark II has been miniaturized to fit a USB plug into the lens rear, which can be screwed into the faux camera body to protect the contact points.

We're guessing this USB peripheral is as petite as the Glico-issued Nikon collectible, though the difference is that the Canon thumbdrive actually works and is available in only 4GB capacity. It can be found on eBay for US$95. I wonder if we will ever see an 8GB version built to replicate the higher-end EOS 1Ds Mark III.

Windows Mobile 7 screenshots leaked?

John Chan  |  Mar 30, 2009

Details are fuzzy at the moment, but apparently these are screenshots of the upcoming Windows Mobile 7 (WM7). The one on the left shows the Marketplace interface which is Microsoft's app store for WM. The second shot shows the IM interface, while the third appears to be the Zune UI for navigating media files on the device.

One interesting thing we noticed is that the battery and volume bars are on the bottom of the screen. These are usually found on top together with the time and network quality so it's a bit strange to see them all the way down south. Of course, these screenshots are probably far from final and could possibly even be just concept images.

It'll take some time before we get anything official about WM7 as even the interim version, WM6.5, hasn't even hit the market. But when it does come, what features do you want to see in the next major release of Windows Mobile? Let us know in the Talkback below.

Epson rolls out two full-HD projectors

Philip Wong  |  Mar 30, 2009

The excruciatingly long wait is finally over. Epson, the company behind the 3LCD technology, is finally launching a pair of home theater projectors to replace the 2007 EMP-TW1000. Some of the more notable enhancements for the full-HD EH-TW3000 and EH-TW4000 include a new but more boxy styling, the latest D7 LCD engine and dual HDMI 1.3a inputs. The flagship EH-TW4000 also stands out with its ultra-high 75,000:1 dynamic contrast, videophile-grade HQV video processor and onboard 100Hz frame rate-doubling technology.

So how does the S$4,888 (US$3,479.25) Epson stacks up against the S$4,999 (US$3,558.26) Panasonic PT-AE3000 and S$5,999 (US$4,270.05) Sanyo PLV-Z3000? For a lower price, the EH-TW4000 is impressive on paper and covers most areas from higher contrast and brightness to a powerful and proven processor. The Panasonic should have an edge in motion production based on positive users' feedback. The EH-TW3000 and EH-TW4000 are priced at S$3,388 (US$2,411.56) and S$4,888 (US$3,479.25), respectively, for Singapore. We've not received any information on regional pricing and availability.

Skype for iPhone: It's official

Jessica Dolcourt  |  Mar 30, 2009

At long last, Skype has come to the iPhone.

Months after teasing us at CES with an announcement of Skype's native VoIP client for the iPhone, the free Skype for iPhone will finally be available to download from the iTunes App Store sometime on Tuesday. We got a chance to sit down with the application's principal engineer before the announcement was made at CTIA 2009, to see Skype for iPhone do its thing.

While most of the features aren't too surprising--Skype does want to maintain some consistency across its mobile applications, after all--there are a few capabilities that are notably missing, and a few iPhone-only perks that are refreshing to see.

In terms of navigation, Skype's VoIP app for iPhone looks more like your traditional iPhone app than it does Skype 4.0 for Windows. For many who already prefer Apple's sleek interface archetype, that's a triumph, but those who enjoy Skype's branding may feel disappointed.

Star Guitar iPhone app helps you learn guitar, write songs

Matt Rosoff  |  Mar 30, 2009

Star Guitar is built around a calculator-like interface that lets you choose from 144 chords.(Credit: Amidio)

I've been playing around with a new iPhone app, Star Guitar, for the last day or so, and it's a sophisticated piece of work that could help beginning guitar players learn how chords fit together into songs, as well as give more experienced songwriters a quick way to record their ideas when they don't have a guitar handy.

Released last week by Amidio, the creators of the Noise.io Pro synthesizer application for the iPhone, Star Guitar is based around a calculator-like interface that lets you choose from 144 chords.

The designers had to be very clever to fit that many chords on a single screen--essentially, you start by picking one of the seven natural-tone letters (A through G), then adding various modifications (flat or sharp, seventh, major, and suspended fourth). You might have to consult the help screen to figure out exactly which combination of buttons will create a particular chord--for example, a G6 is created by hitting "G" and "major"--but for the most part, if you know your chords, it's fairly intuitive.
