Fancy a Nokia notebook?

John Chan  |  Feb 27, 2009

In a few years, instead of making smartphones that look like laptops, Nokia may actually make real notebooks.

Nokia likes to call its high-end smartphones "multimedia computers", a term we've never really taken a liking to. But a few years from now, we may finally see something from the company that will qualify for that title. In a recent interview, Nokia's CEO Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo confirmed that the mobile phone giant is considering putting the Symbian OS in laptops.

Granted, large technology companies are always looking for new ways to diversify their businesses and there's no telling if Kallasvuo's statement will result in actual notebooks. But given Nokia's strong market position and good track record for well-made products, we will definitely welcome its entrance into the computer market. What about you? Would you buy a Nokia laptop which runs on Symbian? Tell us what you think in the Talkback below.

A Nokia notebook... hmm interesting. Symbian OS... well we have to wait and see. What's goin' on Acer making smartpones and Nokia making notebooks? The more options we have the better for us consumers.

Pretty interesting. I recently have gotten my hands on a Windows mobile phone, which is my 2nd to date but having been a UIQ and S60 user for most of the time, I say Microsoft has a long way to making their mobile phone OS as user-friendly as SE and Nokia's. But that may change with WinMo 7. But if Noia would be able to implement the same user-friendliness of their mobile phone OS to netbooks or laptops, that's something I have to try. :-D

I got an impression that it may be a good project to push thorugh very soon. The OS just needs a few developments and tweaks and it should be ready by then to compete with Apple and Windows

i would surely like to see the Symbian OS on a notebook or maybe a netbook first. there's simply not much that the Symbian OS can't handle now. Just look what we have on the Nokia E71, the Office suite is good enough to handle the basic word processing needs. Improve on it a bit and then throw-in the multimedia capabilities of the Nokia 5800 and the coming Nokia N97, the netbook could be semi UMPC too! so i really hope Nokia would go ahead with the project.

I guess it's all depend on the price and functionality.
Of course the price is the lower it's the better it's
for functionality, as long as it serve what it claim to do well, it should be fine, for example in the case it claim all prev. symbian application will work on the netbook/notebook, it's fairly good enuf for most user le. Better dont over-promise, under-deliver, like 1st linux in eee pc701 which claims it can do whatever personal pc can do, mis-lead buyer ....

Well Nokia had problems with the N810 internet tablet, especially after software updates and slow gps. My tablet decided not to connect to the internet and the Nokia customer service took 6 months and a load of stress before they fixed it. But they are good on phones.
