We've seen a fair share of solar-powered devices at Crave Asia, but a phone that worships the AC mains in the sky, now that's a first.
Samsung's going the extra green mile with the
Blue Earth which it plans to debut at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona next week. Technical details about the handset are rather scant at the moment, other than that it comes with a touchscreen display and a solar panel built-in at the back of the phone. The picture seems to show the TouchWiz software which we are already familiar with, but we could be wrong.

The Korean outfit said in the press release that the user interface will let the user adjust screen brightness, backlight duration and Bluetooth to an energy-efficient mode with a click of the "Eco mode". Treehuggers will also be pleased to know that the phone is made out of recycled plastic from water bottles. There is also a feature alerting them on how much CO2 they will save via the use of the onboard pedometer if they choose to walk instead of drive.
Whether the Blue Earth eventually makes it to the global marketplace remains to be seen, but those who are heading up to MWC will be the lucky first few to get up close with Blue Earth.

This is a pretty cool take on "eco-friendly" phones by taking Motorola's concept a step further. I'd like to see this segment take off and birth its own category akin to camera, music, and smart phones.
