Pictures taken with the new Super CCD EXR looked promising and we are looking forward to trying out the new cameras. Picture credit: Fujifilm Japan
While most of the attention was on its 3D camera at Photokina, Fujifilm's new Super CCD EXR sensor deserves some mention, too, now that we have seen some sample pictures taken with it. Read more about Fujifilm's new sensor
here.
The Japanese company showed us photographs which displayed the sensor's capabilities. In terms of high ISO performance, there was not much digital noise in the ISO 1,600 picture exhibited. Compared with images that other point-and-shoot models such as the Panasonic
Lumix DMC-FX520, Nikon
Coolpix S600, Sony
Cyber-shot DSC-W300 and Canon
Digital IXUS 960 IS snapped at similar settings, it was quite obvious that the Fujifilm's CCD produced better image quality.
As for dynamic range, the picture taken with the Super CCD EXR displayed more details in both highlight and shadow regions, and exposure was well balanced. Its competition produced decent pictures, but didn't show as much details as the Fujifilm.
We understand from the company that the pixel array in the new sensor was rearranged to deliver on optimized high ISO performance and finer details. In order to create a high dynamic range photograph, the sensor captures a scene with dual ISO sensitivities and combines them into one image to display more details.
However, not all its shooters will incorporate Super CCD EXR. Fujifilm told us the first three or four shooters to utilize this technology will be announced in February next year, just in time for PMA. Check back with us as we'll be keeping an eye out for the new cameras.
