Nokia's smart phone roadmap spilled

This certainly makes for good rumormongering on a slow Tuesday morning. You know how Nokia has always shied from or kept mum on clarifying any rumors and product roadmaps we pose to the company? Well, it appears someone has been poking around and, miracle of miracles, gotten hold of some juicy details on the Finnish firm's smart phone roadmap. Engadget Mobile's got the scoop and we are breaking it down here for you.

It appears there are at least four more S60 5th Edition devices on the calendar, two of which caught our attention. The Corolla (codename) is purported to sport a 3-inch VGA display, 8-megapixel camera, half QWERTY keyboard, 8GB ROM, Wi-Fi, HSPA and A-GPS, while the Eitri (codename) will come with a 3.5-inch 640 x 350-pixel display and a pressure-sensitive touch user interface that provides tactile feedback and probably recognizes gestures as well.

Other devices to look forward to will include a refresh of the N85, a more basic version of the E71, and a slide-sliding QWERTY. The E51 is also expected to get a successor with built-in A-GPS, a 3-megapixel camera and LED flash.

There's always a disclaimer somewhere. Not all of these prototypes or working models will make it to the market and no one can be certain how accurate the roadmap is. But it does tell us that 2009 is probably going to be an exciting year from Nokia. If you are still with us, pop over to Engadget Mobile to peep at the table in all its full glory.

Eitri from what I think is the ultimate iPhone killer. Good luck Nokia!

Given Nokia's laziness and over confident attitude, it can only go downwards from 2009.
Its been years since the first touch phone hit the market, and we are yet to see one from Nokia.
Its too late for Nokia as new entrants who better understand the pulse of the market has already made serious inroads to Nokia's market share.
All we saw last few years was an upgrade of N95 to N95 8gb and it being renamed N96 with 16gb and an idiotic high price tag.
Nokia needs to remake its roadmap if it wants to remain one of the top players.

As someone who owns an ipod touch (gave my iphone 3g to my bro) i have different opinions than you Guwahati. My 28 month can do everything......& then some!. The only positives iphone/ipod touch has its web browser (it really is the best), media playback (altough only propritery formats supported & quality is shoddy) & the app store. As a phone a basic Nokia (or any s60 phone for that matter) beats it hands-down.

Touch screens are still in infancy and make a miniscule amount of the Global phone market. The average people who make up 98% of the market want a phone that works whenever they want it. You can never replace tactile buttons (try dialing a # on an iphone while driving!).

Nokia & Samsung (not sure what SE is upto) will get there eventually and till then they will continue to gain market share (as evidenced by the anylists #'s from the past 8 quaters).

Well I would agree to you on the point that Nokia is still doing well as far as mass market products are concerned, Munk.
But when it comes to futuristic and the top end of the market, Nokia unfortunately is the loser. Quality wise Nokia is the king for sure, but they lake in renovation and modern design. And, thats where newer entrants are eating up Nokia's market share.

At some point I'd have to agree with you on your post regarding Nokia being too slow to cope up with innovation. Nokia is infamously into redesigning its present mobile phones with lesser additions with a bit "yesterdayISH" technology. Apple was indeed a great influence to Nokia and perhaps, to other mobile phone companies as well when the touch screen with multi-touch interface was introduced. The real issue by that time was functionality vs aesthetics. The iPhone is beautiful phone but a lot still preferred phones which are feature-rich: a quality that would strongly remind you of a Nokia. From what I see, Nokia is now trying to cope up but I'm afraid that by the time it gets its realization, the hype may no longer be as intense as it is right now (which can lead to strategy failure in the long run).

Munk says...
You guys both do well in realizing iphones hype. imho (& having used it as well) its just hype & not much else. But im not here to bash it non-stop.

Nokia may be in a very bad place right now, i.e not coming out with direct competitors in the touch screen department & in some ways getting beaten on its home turf (the latest and greatest sped'd s60 phone is the Samsung innova8).

The way I see it though is that Nokia wants to grow the market first. They have released the 5800 at a price that people can still not belive to be as cheap as it is. This will allow it to have mass appeal and introduce a touch enabled phone to people who've never used one. I know its a resistive touch but all the people who've demoed the phone so far claim that its quite usable.

Besides if the above rumor is to be believed they will have a TS phone similar to the Blackberry Storm as well (ala a depressing TS). Who knows maybe a Multi-Touch as well?

Symbian (s60) is a versatile plat form but one that was solely created with a small screen and buttons in mind. At its current stage it can not compete in the flashiness of something like the iphone of g1. People are expecting the new Symbian Foundation to have their platform out be sometime 2010 & I think that is when we will see SW that compliments the hardware.

I know you guys will say thats too late & that maybe so, but the iphone and g1 still lack some of the basic features. The iphone will never ever be taken as a serious productivity/smart phone till it runs multiple apps at a time. Not to forget copy/paste.

The G1 on the other hand is still in early beta.

I agree with Munk's first post that any S60 phone can beat the iPhone hands down. iPhone has a lot of hype but other than the touchscreen, the iPhone is useless. Nokia will slowly catch up in terms of innovation. But touchscreen phones make up only a small share mobile phone market. Nokia is always better than other phones for user interface and it is only a matter of time that a Nokia iPhone "killer" comes out. Just wait and watch...
