Is this the rear of RED's speculated dSLR? Picture credit: RED
RED founder Jim Jannard is
teasing fans by releasing images which point to a new dSLR in the making. Although the company is probably more well-known for its high-quality video cameras, the line between still cameras and their video counterpart was blurred when Canon released the EOS 5D Mark II which is capable of capturing 1080p-quality clips.
Jannard didn't reveal much on RED's online forum but did mention that "things are not as they seem. They are better".
If RED were to launch a digital still camera, it probably would have to work with another big brand such as Canon or Nikon to use the lens mount and optics. However, there is also a chance that RED may sell this technology to another company to be incorporated into future units. But knowing the company, it is highly unlikely, though we wouldn't discount this option.
With camera rails and rigs
already manufactured for Canon, it goes to show how much importance the industry is placing on this technology. Surely RED will want a piece of the pie and, fortunately, we don't have to wait long before the company makes the announcements.
