One piece of equipment which has recently rocked the competitive swimming world greatly is the Speedo LZR RACER suit. Wearing this full body swimsuit, athletes have broken dozens of world records, thanks to benefits like reduced drag and a "Core Stabiliser" that helps the swimmer maintain an optimum body position.
In light of this, swimmers who do not don this wonder suit are in a disadvantaged position. This is especially true for those who are sponsored by other brands and are compelled to wear their sponsor's products. Nike is one of these companies which has swimmers funded by its budget and, in a gracious move, has given its athletes the green light to wear the LZR RACER if they want to during the Beijing Olympics.
In a day and age when marketing can make or break a product and where athletes sign contracts with apparel brands for millions of dollars, it's heartening to see Nike do the right thing and think of its swimmers first. But knowing how the market works, we're won't be surprised if the sporting giant is working extra hard in the labs as we speak to create a suit that will match or better Speedo's revolution.
