Touch Diamond priced for Asia--cheaper than Cruise

John Chan  |  May 22, 2008

The HTC Touch Diamond was first announced in Europe earlier this month, and in its press release the company said the device will be available worldwide this quarter. Today, HTC officially announced the new PDA-phone for Singapore and gave it a retail price of S$1,098 (US$809).

Hitting the stores in June, the Diamond will debut at S$100 less than the Touch Cruise which was launched at S$1,198. Considering their feature sets, it's inconceivable that the Cruise should be priced higher than the Diamond. We expect that HTC will have to make some price cuts soon, so look out for that. The rest of Asia Pacific will also be getting the Diamond in June. As of now, CNET Asia blogger Victor Cheung has already informed us of its impending Hong Kong release, and you shouldn't have to wait long for your local HTC office to make a similar announcement.

Apple, CBS sued over Mighty Mouse device

Erica Ogg  |  May 22, 2008

A computer peripheral maker filed suit against Apple and CBS on Tuesday, claiming the companies are infringing on its trademark for the "Mighty Mouse" device.

Maryland-based Man & Machine says it was selling its chemical-resistant and waterproof mouse to hospitals a year before Apple sold its single-button mouse of the same name.

CBS owns the rights to the Mighty Mouse cartoon and licensed the use of the name to Apple. The network was named in the lawsuit because Man & Machine says it doesn't have the right to license the name. Both Man & Machine and CBS have trademark applications for the name and are currently dueling for the US Patent and Trademark Office's approval.

Man & Machine is asking for monetary damages and for a court to issue an injunction to prevent Apple from selling any more of its Mighty Mouse devices.

Note: CBS has agreed to acquire CNET Networks, publisher of News.com. The deal is expected to close in the third quarter.

HP introduces new "green" label for products

Erica Ogg  |  May 22, 2008
Sure, recycled paper is nice, but what about feeding it through a recycled printer?

Not as in refurbished and resold, but a new Deskjet that is composed of 83 percent recycled plastic. Hewlett-Packard is introducing a new green-focused label for some of its peripherals, and one of the first items under that label is the aforementioned D2545 printer.

HP hopes to tempt the environmentally conscious as well as those looking for a bargain with the D2545, which retails for US$45. Even the ink cartridges it uses are made of recycled plastic resins.

The printer is one of several products that will fall under the HP Eco Highlights label. So far it also includes three LaserJet printers (P4015x, P4515x, and P4515xm models). HP says the label will list the environmental attributes of the product, and will eventually encompass all products the company offers.

HP recycles tons of dead tech products every year, so it makes sense that it's able to make products from the materials it recycles. So while consumers are becoming much more aware of the environmental impact of the products we use, and even businesses are beginning to see the boon that green policies are to their bottom lines, why not make this standard instead of an outlier?

HP responded that by 2010,100 percent of its Deskjet printers will contain some recycled materials, and will increase by three times the number of inkjet printers made from recycled materials.

Dior phone will come with a "Mini-Me"

Mike Yamamoto  |  May 22, 2008

The rumored Christian Dior phone we mentioned the other day is apparently a reality, and there's no surprise that it's being created by ModeLabs. Not only is the boutique handset manufacturer based in Paris, but it also has become something of the phone maker to the stars, having contracted with the likes of Hummer, Tag Heuer, and Levi's to develop their own branded blowers.

Information on specs for the "My Dior" remain elusive, as does the timing of its release, except that it has "all the regular features of a cellphone--a touch screen, a camera, ring tones," according to the Wall Street Journal. That's not terribly encouraging given the expected price of US$5,000. But to be fair, the cost includes two phones: The main handset and a "minature phone barely bigger than a USB key." The latter supposedly clips to the outside of a bag and connects with its larger sibling inside, avoiding the need to rummage around frantically when it's ringing. Yeah, that's what we were thinking too.

Would you buy a gold iPhone for US$6,000?

Mike Yamamoto  |  May 22, 2008
Readers are always asking, justifiably so, who in their right minds would buy a gold or diamond- studded gadget. (The operative phrase here is "right minds," of course.) But ours is not to question why.

What we do know, if this eBay auction is any indication, is that some people are willing to pay thousands of dollars for a 24k gold iPhone--presuming that the bids are authentic. The auction, tracked by Gizmodo, drew 69 bids and ended with a sale price of US$6,000 last night.

The phone itself is unlocked and of the 16GB variety, apparently from an outfit appropriately dubbed iCandyPhones. The winner's handle wasn't disclosed, perhaps for fear of ridicule by his or her friends.
