Countdown to HP Mini-Note launch

Darius Chang  |  May 07, 2008

For those waiting with bated breath for HP's first sub-notebook, you won't have to stay blue in the face for much longer. The HP Compaq 2133 Mini-Note will be making an appearance in Singapore come May 15.

The aluminum-clad model is economically priced in the US at US$499 for the Linux edition and US$599 for the Windows Vista model. Unfortunately, the Linux Mini-Note will not be making an appearance where for now, while the starting price for the entry-level configuration is S$999 (US$719.27) with the following specifications:

  • VIA 1.2GHz processor
  • 2GB RAM
  • 120GB harddisk
  • 8.9-inch widescreen display
  • Webcam
  • 802.11b/g and Bluetooth
  • Vista Home Basic 32

  • The higher-end configuration, which has the same components as the US$749 model reviewed by CNET US, bumps up the processor to 1.6GHz with Vista Business Edition installed. The local pricing for this unit is S$1,199 (US$863.27).

Interestingly, at the current currency exchange rates, US consumers are able to get their hands on the HP Compaq 2133 for a significantly lower cost. The price point is also a little anti-climatic as HP's offering is significantly more expensive than the S$798 (US$574.56) ASUS Eee PC 900. There are budget dual-core laptops in the market which target the same price range as the HP sub-notebook.

We are still awaiting word on the launch dates for other Asian markets as well as when, or if, Linux and Windows XP Mini-Notes will hit our shores.

S$999 worth the price for an ultraportable with a VIA chip? may or may not, especially if you're comparing a pda-phone versus this one or the Eee. now the average consumer is getting more confused!

How can these ultra mobile pc's can be called cheaper alternative to laptops? When full pledged laptops are at the same price and with an optical drive to boot. The price isn't justified for me. I'll just buy a real laptop in the U.S.

For S$1199, it is considered pricey! The Asus P900, you can get it around S$699.00 in some country and the difference in pricing is even more compare to Hp min-notebook. For this price, you should get at least a 10 inch LCD not 8.9 inch. It is not a cheaper alternative. It is just a downgrade product from HP.

As a 2nd/ backup portable notebook, price may be more expensive compared to ASUS Eee PC but I guess, have to pay for the HP name. . .

Wonder what is the weight for HP's mini.

ho ho ho, I was thinking the price range would be as competitive as EEE-pc looks like its not.. at those kinda range it would definitly thwart off lots of people, little of taking a 2nd look at it, HP please revise your price.
