Full YouTube on the N95 8GB

Update: According to Nokia, Flash Lite 3 is also available for the N95 and N82. If you have one of these devices but can't use YouTube in the way outlined here, check with Nokia if you need a firmware upgrade.

Yesterday, we made mention of Adobe Flash Lite 3 and how it would be included in future Windows Mobile devices. At that point, we overlooked the fact that Flash Lite 3 has already been implemented in the Nokia N95 8GB since January. It just so happened that we have this model lying around in the office, and we immediately tried out YouTube on its browser.

When you first visit YouTube.com on the N95 8GB's browser, it redirects you to the mobile site, m.youtube.com. That works for many phones without any Flash support and isn't the full experience. What we want is the full desktop YouTube site.

The Series 60 browser is one of the best you can find for any mobile device, and navigating YouTube.com wasn't an issue. We quickly picked out a video, and lo and behold, it worked! Aside from being able to view the video as you do on a desktop browser, you can choose to click on the video and it displays in full-screen mode. Video playback was smooth, though the browser did slow down quite a bit when the video was running. We tried this using both HSDPA and Wi-Fi, and it worked flawlessly. That's it, no more boring bus rides anymore.

Embedded below is a YouTube video (not shot by us) showing someone watching YouTube on his N95 8GB. You know that recursive effect where you point a video camera at a TV showing what the camera shoots? Recreate it by watching this video with your own N95 8GB.
