When Acer went to bat and co-created the original Gemstone design with BMW designers, the result from this partnership was, to some, Rosemary's baby. Thankfully, instead of falling back on its old silver-and-black roots, the Taiwanese maker has unleashed the next evolution, the Gemstone Blue.
This new iteration looks very promising and ready to bring a touch of class to budget portables.
Based on the latest Core 2 Duo Penryn processors, the Acer Aspire 6920 and 8920G are notable for using full-HD displays. That's right. The LCD on these babies (16-inch for the former, 18.4-inch for the 8920G) can display full 1080p widescreen movies at 1,920 x 1,080-pixel resolution. These new toys are obviously decked out for entertainment folks, with a unique touch-sensitive control (pictured below) gracing the side of the keyboard. Blu-ray drives are also offered with these units, though we are not sure if it comes standard or as an addon option.
The Aspire 6920 is powered by an Nvidia GeForce 9500M graphics chip, while the Aspire 8920G uses a more powerful GeForce 9650M unit. Battery life is a respectable 2.5 hours for the former and 3 hours for the latter (possibly decked out with a larger power cell). These units are likely to hit Asia-Pacific shores sometime in mid-April. Prices are not available yet, so while you wait, here are two more images to whet your appetite.
