It's official. HD-DVD is history

Philip Wong  |  Feb 19, 2008

The HD format war is finally over! Toshiba has officially announced its exit from the HD-DVD business. This will begin with reduced shipment of relevant players, recorders and their PC drive equivalent, leading to a complete cessation by end March 2008. Nevertheless, it's encouraging that the company will continue to provide full product support and aftersales service for its HD-DVD products. In the meantime, we have sounded out its local Asian office and are awaiting word on its direction, including the yet-to-launch HD-EP30 HD-DVD player.

On the other front, LG will still be launching its BH200 dual-format player in March, while Samsung is pulling the plug for the BD-UP5000, at least in Singapore and other selected Asian markets. This latest development will probably result in stronger Blu-ray hardware and software adaptation in the coming months, but I'm just glad a Blu-ray edition of blockbuster Transformers may be well underway. Oh yeah, do keep it affordable please.

Chains and speeds up your downloading process

Leonard Goh  |  Feb 19, 2008
For the more serious photographer who uses a dSLR, the Delkin Image Router will be a great addition to his gear. It can read multiple CF (Compact Flash) cards in a single go, and transfer all the data on the cards to the computer via USB 2.0.

Ok, even though I don't even fill up one CF media when I shoot, I think this will be a good device to use after you come back from a shooting trip. For press photographers, I guess this will be even more popular as multiple parties can download their images to the computer. If you really have a lot to transfer, you can link up to three Image Routers together and do a simultaneous transfer of up to 12 cards!
However, you have to use an optional software, BackupAndBurn, to download your images. This software can rename your files as you download, or even sort out the different file formats you've shot to allocated folders.

I'd like to see an SD (Secure Digital) card version out soon, because most of our compact point-and-shoot use that. If not, I guess this will make for an expensive accessory to display and brag about. For about US$150, you get the Image Router itself, or for US$249 you have it bundled with BackupAndBurn. The Image Router will start to ship in April, and can be purchased online.

A Roomba for your desk

John Chan  |  Feb 19, 2008
We don't know if the (mis)spelling is intentional, but here's the Robo Vacum, a desktop vacuum cleaner for your workspace. Though the picture somewhat suggests it, this cute little thing doesn't maneuver around your table by itself. You press its button found on the head, and move it to where you may have left crumbs from your Subway sandwich.

Not quite a Roomba, but that's all right since you wouldn't want something automated to fall off your table and make a mess on the carpet anyway. It's available from Wowzzers at US$18.99 and should make a cool novelty gift. Our only gripe: It uses two AA batteries and not the USB ports for power.

Grid yourself for Tic Tac Toast

Juniper Foo  |  Feb 19, 2008

From the makers of the I Love You toast embosser comes yet more toasty treats. This one ignores the childhood warning from mother not to play with your food. The Tic Tac Toast stamper (US$2.99) turns your wonder slice into a Tic Tac Toe gameboard, though instead of noughts and crosses, try some saucy toppings like peanut butter and raspberry jam. Loser gets the crumbs.

Guitar Hero gets a baby brother

Mike Yamamoto  |  Feb 19, 2008
The fact that someone labored to create a Guitar Hero-DS Lite mashup tells us that guitar mania is definitely ready to go mobile. But alas, the aforementioned combo was but a conceptual dream.

Still, there may be something to appease the ever-expanding legions of heroes for the time being in the form of a miniature version created by Basic Fun, apparently with Activision's blessing.

The Guitar Hero Carabiner, which made its debut at the International Toy Fair in New York on Sunday, measures a petite 7.75 long and 3 inches wide, though the neck can fold down to cut its length in half. And if your pockets are already full with your DS Lite and PSP, the carabiner can dangle from your bag or backpack, as Chip Chick notes--though you may want to keep an eye out for moochers trying to sneak a game while you're looking the other way on the bus or subway.

The little guy has its own small LCD so it needs no console or computer to work. And even though it may look like something for Playskool toddlers, it's still far less humilating than yet another rendition of Smoke on the Water via air guitar.
