The
Palm Foleo was canned last year, even after so much talk from its creator about how it would revolutionalize the use of smart phones. No matter. If Palm won't make one, someone else will.
Redfly will be showing off its Mobile Companion at CES this year, a notebook-like device meant to be used with your Windows Mobile phone. Its purpose is to give a larger display, keyboard and mouse so you can make better use of your handset. Yes, it sounds exactly like the Foleo, and at the same price, too--US$499.
Though the Foleo was demonstrated with Palm OS, it would have worked with Windows Mobile as well because of the
Treo 750. Palm even said it would work with many other mobile OSes as long as the manufacturers want to participate. Even then, analysts and commentators
didn't quite give it a chance--it's commonly known as the "Fooleo", even on Palm fansites.
Going by that, this Mobile Companion may have an uphill task. But if this product from Redfly becomes a hit, we can picture Ed Colligan sitting at his desk hitting his forehead repeatedly against the table going "why, why, why?"
