Philips' sleek mobile entertainer

Reuben Lee  |  Nov 29, 2007
From the company which first brought us the CD and DVD comes yet another portable multimedia player, the 4GB GoGear SA6145. While the device could have done with a less daunting model name, it does offer a decent set of features.

There is a large 3.5-inch QVGA display which is great for watching video clips and viewing photos. Users have the option of using the onboard speakers or earphones (via the 3.5mm jack) for audio playback. Storage capacity is capped at 4GB, which may be a tad too small for some people, but there is onboard FM radio as well as a voice recorder. The common audio and image formats such as MP3, WMA and JPEG are supported, but videos are limited to WMV9 format only. A video converter software is, however, bundled to support other video formats.

According to Philips, the SA6145 will be available only in selected Asia-Pacific markets, including Singapore, Thailand, New Zealand and Malaysia. It is now retailing at S$309 in Singapore.

Korean man killed by phone battery explosion

Reuben Lee  |  Nov 28, 2007

Update: A further investigation has revealed that the Korean man was killed by his co-worker, not the mobile phone battery explosion. See the full report here.

While research scientists are still grappling with how using cellular handsets are harmful to the human body, a fatal accident involving a mobile phone happened recently in Korea. According to a report from TelecomsKorea News Service, a 33-year-old man was found dead, presumably killed by an explosion of a mobile phone battery identified to be from LG, though no specific model was stated.

It was reported that the man, known as Sur, was found lying beside an electronic shovel at a quarry where he worked as a shovel operator. A co-worker described him as bleeding from the nose and having a phone with melted battery in his left shirt pocket. Meanwhile, a professor from the Chungbuk National University after examining the body conjectured that the phone battery explosion, which punctured his heart and lungs, was the main cause of death. He added that Sur's ribs and spine were broken.

This is the first time a cell phone battery explosion has taken a life in Korea. Earlier this year, a man in China was reportedly killed by a mobile phone explosion.

How green is your office?

Juniper Foo  |  Nov 28, 2007

And it looks like McLaren's Lewis Hamilton pips Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen to win the Singapore Formula One! If only. Instead, the only race being fought out at today's breakfast seminar was one on a slow track that was gearing up one notch: The race toward greening offices and their bottom lines.

Leaving a lesser carbon footprint while trimming costs were key messages that global video-conferencing leader Tandberg and the Singapore Environment Council delivered at the unveiling of Singapore's--and possibly Asia's--first Green Office. The aim: To raise environmental awareness among the business community and to provide an advisory role on the hows, while improving productivity and lowering costs. Toward this end, both partners will have a permanent Green Office showcased at SEC's Cluny Road premises, with real estate developer City Developments lending a hand with permanent roadshows that may go beyond the island state.

Nikon D3 and D300 apes D2X

Edvarcl Heng  |  Nov 28, 2007

Current D2X or D2Xs users are possibly all ready to switch over to the new crop of Nikon dSLRs. But these guys are probably too used (or attached?) to the color reproduction of their existing dSLRs.

As a camera, the D2X is an excellent specimen. So photographers who have already set up their existing color management workflow (from camera to computer display to printer) would probably be loathed to rework the entire chain.

As a primer, color management is the strict adherence to color accuracy such that an image will look the same on any display (printout or monitor).

This is because different devices reproduce color differently. The same "yellow" shade captured by a camera may look bright on a CRT monitor, but washed-out in a photograph.

Seasoned photographers would already have calibrated their workflow devices (camera, monitor and printer) to display consistent colors. This is the target group of users that Nikon is reaching out to with this new download.

With the D3 and D300, Nikon is allowing these two cameras to emulate the D2X's color reproduction.

All that's needed is a quick install of the Picture Control System, which is available as a download on Nikon's site.

So rather than revamping your entire color management workflow for a new camera, all you need is to click "install".

The "smallest precision guitar", at a big price

Mike Yamamoto  |  Nov 28, 2007
The craze over guitars may be getting bigger by the day, but at least one gadget maker is looking to shrink them--to the point of the "smallest precision electric guitar" available.

How small? It measures just 26.5 inches long yet still includes 20 frets, according to its product description. (But we'll spare you the marketing-speak about reproducing the "cellular structure of wood" and such.)

Of course, there's always the question of why someone would want one of these, not to mention spend US$800 for it. Especially when there are "Pac-Man Guitars" to be had.
