At SITEX, it pays to bargain

Edvarcl Heng  |  Nov 30, 2007

In Singapore, it's SITEX week. So both early Christmas shoppers and tech-heads will be out in droves to the Singapore Expo this weekend to scoop out the best deals they can find.

Those who are a fair hand at bargaining will benefit especially. Prices are not quite what they seem. Because behind almost every pamphlet lies hidden savings.

Sweet talk here, haggle there, and hey, there's an extra SD card in it for you. We even succeeded in haggling S$50 off a camera's bundle price, and yes, we got to keep the freebies as well.

The trick is to stay focused and bargain hard. And if one salesman refuses to budge, just scoot over to another and start again. In the end, someone will succumb, but you should make sure it isn't you.

If you aren't in the mood to quibble, we've got five digicam star buys that will save you the bother. And you are still welcome to push it down further at the fair which ends this Sunday. Maybe someone will throw in a free cleaning kit just to get you off his back.

Click on these for our selected star buys. Happy shopping.

Crasher says...
I can understand that every consumer would want to get the best deal for their every penny. But it's also people who are like you out there making the life of the promoters hard.

Do you have any idea that when the promoter talks to you for a bit longer, his/her income is greatly affected? For every additional 5-10mins spent on you just because
you want a better deal, the time could be put to better use. So for every 3-6 customers like you who tried to bargain, that's 30mins wasted. That 30mins could be spent attending to other consumers who are just as interested in the product as you. Why would you want to deprive others of this privilege?

Sometimes, it's not that the promoters do not want to give you a discount. Sometime when they do give you discounts, the discount is actually deducted from their commission... Many consumers do not know that. So please, when a promoter spends the time and effort to attend and explain things to you the next time, spare a thought for them. They are trying to make a living too. How would you feel if you spent time and effort explaining to a consumer but he decided to buy from someone else instead?

I'm both a consumer and a retailer myself.
