New colors and specs for HTC Touch

John Chan  |  Nov 16, 2007

How do you continue to milk a device that's selling well? Offer it in different colors, of course. Starting immediately, HTC will be selling the Touch in four different hues. Aside from the already existing black and green shades, it will now come in white and burgundy (to the geeks who can think only in RGB: It's a dark, purplish shade of red).

That's not all, too. Remember how we slagged it off for being unresponsive? The company has doubled its memory, bringing its RAM to 128MB and ROM to 256MB. That's decent of HTC, considering the price remains the same at S$848. Added 3G would have been nice as well, though we know that's too much to ask for now.

This revision is available in the region and replaces the original version--which poses a tiny problem: How do you know you are getting the souped-up revision when buying one? Okay, it's obvious that any burgundy and white ones you get will have the improved specs, but if you are getting the black or green edition, look out for a sticker on the box. If you want to be doubly sure, we suggest taking the following steps before swiping your credit card.
  1. Turn on the device
  2. Tap Start, then Settings
  3. Go to the System tab and tap on Memory
  4. Check the Total memory value under the Program column
This should show more than 64MB. It may not be the full 128MB because some of it is not available to the user due to essential system apps in the background, but it should be close to about 100MB. If that checks out, you're safe--it's the new Touch.

Go on over to the Touch's gallery to see the new colors in closer detail.

Hi John,

Can we know when will it be available ? This is because you have stated this "Starting immediately, HTC will be selling the Touch in four different hues" & "This revision is available in the region and replaces the original version"

Where can we purchase it in Singapore ?

Will be waiting for your advice soon

Regards
Mr Foo

What that means is that HTC has shipped out these devices to retailers. I would love to tell you exactly where you can go buy one, but I don't track stocks in stores. It would probably be wiser if you called HTC and get it straight from the horse's mouth. You can find the company's contact number on the HTC Asia Web site.

Hi John Chan,

We received a bad news from a user who just bought this phone this afternoon, at a M1 shop. The phone is in White colour & the ROM size is updated, which is 256MB. But the RAM size still remain in 64MB

You may look into Post #18 from the below given link

Hi, thanks for the heads up. I've looked through the thread you posted, and it seems like the person who says it's 64MB RAM hasn't handled the device physically yet, but got the information that it is 64MB from an M1 staff. This will probably get sorted out once someone actually gets the device and verifies it, so let's hold off making any sort of conclusion for now.

Hi John Chan,

There's an update on PPCSG forum, look into Post #35, below
www.ppcsg.com...

It is indeed 128 RAM, but half of it were taken up by the operating system
We need you to ask HTC the resaon on why it took up so much space. Also, can you verify whether the operating speed has increased ?

Will be waiting for your reply soon

How much memory is used up from bootup depends on how many applications run in the background at startup. It is not uncommon for a PDA-phone to have half its RAM used up before you run any applications.

As to whether the operating speed has increased, we'll have to try it out first before knowing.
