You may have heard that
O2 has sold its device business in Asia to the management. A new company has been formed with the name Mobile and Wireless Group (MWG) and is still led by O2 Asia Pacific CEO Mark Billington. Though the announcement may have come suddenly, the new company has wasted no time in putting up its Web site,
www.mwg.com.
Most of the site is the same as the old O2 Asia Pacific site, with information about products, support matters and FAQs. But the content is not exactly a carbon copy, and two differences particularly stand out.
First, on the
products page, three shadows labeled Xda Atom 4, Xda Flame 2 and Xda Zinc 2 are prominently displayed--a teaser for the company's upcoming products. In the press release from O2 Asia Pacific about the transition, there was mention that MWG will be announcing its 2008 lineup in the coming months. So now we have an inkling of which products it intends to refresh.
The other interesting tidbit is in the "
Where to buy" page. On the old O2 site, shops and operators carrying the products would be listed. Now, the links all point to sites owned by online retailer
Expansys. For example, if you clicked on Hong Kong, your browser would take a trip to Expansys Hong Kong where you can make an online order. This is, of course, due to the fact that Expansys, a UK-based firm, took a stake in MWG for the buy-out from O2. I'm sure we'll see more of how that will work out for the Xda line of handhelds in the months to come.
