As the old cliche goes, a picture tells a thousand words. So, more than just read about the Olympus E-3 in our hands-on, you should check out some of the photos snagged at its launch event in Tokyo.
First up is of course the opener, the President of Olympus flanked by a pair of young ladies. We somehow still find it strange to see models holding cameras because they get behind the lens, pretending to be photographers for the sake of getting photographed.
At the HP SmartOffice launch in Vietnam today, HP showcased its latest USB network print adapter alongside the new range of office laser printers.
Barely the size of a four-port USB hub, the little black box allows your to hook up your USB printer to a router, thereby allowing the peripheral to be shared between different PCs without having to exchange plugs. Though network printing adapters have been in the market for a long time, HP's offering is possibly one of the more affordable options around. It will retail for US$69 when it becomes available in Asia next month. This device works on a 10/100 Ethernet connection and is compatible with Windows XP as well as Vista.
In how many ways can you induce/encourage/coerce people to spend more on a particular product without them having to turn to third-party accessory makers? One, offer new face plates (boring). Two, introduce new colors and convince unsuspecting users that they need to have a second set, even though they may have the product already.
So, what's the deal here? Apparently, Nokia has introduced new colors to its existing E61i and E65 handsets in Singapore. (We are currently awaiting confirmation from Nokia on the availability of the new color offerings in other parts of Asia.) The E61i now comes in Titanium Black and the E65 in Pink and Plum. Well, we're not complaining and we're pretty sure some people out there will welcome the new shades, too. Yours to grab at S$658 for the E65 and S$758 for the E61i. The handsets are bundled with a 256MB microSD card preloaded with Gizmo SIP VoIP, Widsets, Pict2Theme (for E65), games (for E65) and new call/device/messaging management solutions (for E61i).
Update: We got it wrong for the second color of the E65. It's actually Plum instead of Blum as reported earlier.
Your friend sends you an email attachment, you open it unwittingly, and bam! You end up with irritating spyware on your PC. Having suffered a similar encounter only recently when an infected MSN file caused mayhem to my work day, not to mention my computer system, I've been "shopping" around for software solutions out there that can minimize such occurrences.
So when True Image 11 Home from Acronis announced its latest all-in-one solution for backup, recovery and security on the PC, this had my attention. Targeted at home and SOHO users, one of the noteworthy features in this latest version is the Try&Decide function. It allocates an isolated yet protected space on the computer to perform the desired tasks, letting users decide whether to keep the changes or delete them completely without exposing the hard drive to viruses, trojans or other security threats.
In other words, you can now open an email attachment or even install a new software application without having to worry about putting your computer at risk.
Other notable features are the Drive Cleanser which lets users securely erase hard drives and the File Shredder to ensure deleted files are not recoverable. The latest version also comes with options to protect and backup system files, automatically catalog backup locations, and recover messages from Outlook.
The Acronis True Image, which is now distributed by New Era in Southeast Asia, goes for US$49.99 and should start shipping to selected Asia countries this month.
Taiwanese handset maker HTC is expected to ship about 50,000 cell phones by the end of this year that use a mobile operating system from Google, according to a Fortune article that cites a report from a UBS analyst.
The phones won't be for sale until next year; the initial shipment will go to developers, says analyst Benjamin Schachter. Google is likely talking to other handset manufacturers, he says.
Google has declined to comment on rumors of its phone plans. Google is hosting an analyst day on October 24, and Schachter expects the company to talk about its phone strategy then.
