Eat that, Apple! S60 goes touchscreen

S60 (a.k.a. Symbian Series60) has gone touchscreen! Isn't that wonderful news? Or am I the only one who feels that it's a long overdue announcement on Nokia's part. At the recent Symbian Smartphone Show held in London, the Finnish company showed off its new S60 touch interface that brings several added features to the handheld platform. It includes support for tactile feedback, backward compatiblity to run existing S60 apps (without any modification), detection of motion, orientation, proximity, light as well as the capability to display Flash videos on the S60 Web browser. The new technology is expected to be available to device manufacturers only in 2008.

When exactly? We are not sure. And Nokia is certainly not going to give more specific details. Hopefully, we can see the first products based on the touchscreen Series60 platform before the Apple iPhone reaches Asia. We'll be keeping our fingers crossed.

this is the fisrt time someone has finally given touchscreens what they needed from the beginning but the technology wasnt there yet. hats off to Symbian to come up with the first haptics for mobile devices. Without feedback like i say, its like making love to a plastic doll: buzzzword.blogspot.com... I am still curios to see and try how they implemented haptics. Bilal

"long overdue", you can say that again. In my review of the nokia n95 8gb posted about a month back I propsed something similar. Had this new version of n95 been running a touch screen interface there would definitely have neen conversations that would have ended without the mention of iphone! Its good that nokia realizes that consumers want to see change. A change from their very old interface, an interface that looks at you no matter if you are holding a nokia 1000 series or the nokia n series. This move on was inevitable, but i feel that even they would be aware of it since long. The devices are just so good in terms of being packed with functionality that they dont let go of their due market share anyway. And i think 'nokia' cashes in on that.
